Why do I need to wear an SPF?
UV damage is the primary cause of collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation and general ageing of the skin – up to 90% of skin ageing is caused by UV rays. Unprotected, cumulative UV exposure can also lead to cellular mutations such as skin cancer.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB?
UVA and UVB are the two types of ultraviolet rays that reach the Earth’s surface. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause photoageing such as wrinkles; UVB rays damage the outermost layers of the skin, and are responsible for sunburn. Our Skin Insurance formulas offer broad-spectrum protection – this means they shield skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
Do I need to wear SPF in the winter?
Yes, as UV radiation is present all-year round. You should also apply your SPF even if you are inside all day, as UV rays can penetrate the glass in your windows.
What does the SPF number mean?
SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’. The number refers to the amount of time it would take your skin to burn when using this SPF as directed vs wearing no protection at all – e.g. correct application of SPF 30 would theoretically prevent your skin from burning 30 times longer than if you were wearing no SPF at all.
How much SPF should I apply?
A general rule is to aim for about 1 ounce, or 2 tablespoons, for your body – about half a teaspoon of this should be applied to your face alone.
How often should I reapply my SPF?
It’s recommended to reapply your SPF every 2 hours; and more often if you are perspiring, swimming or have dried yourself with a towel.
Which Skin Insurance formula is right for me?
The best SPF is the one you will use – every day! If you prefer an untinted formula that you can apply beneath your makeup, our SPF 50 Invisible will be perfect for you. If you want a multi-tasking SPF that will streamline your regime, our Skin Insurance SPF 30 and 50+ Perfecting Tint both shield skin from damage whilst perfecting and brightening with a subtle tint. And don’t forget to protect the thin, delicate skin around the eyes with our Eye Insurance SPF 30.
Do I need blue light protection, too?
Blue light from digital screens has also been proven to damage the skin, causing inflammation and hyperpigmentation over time. Our Skin Insurance formulas contain Celligent®, which provides protection against blue light, as well as enabling rapid repair from UV-related cellular and DNA damage.
What other ingredients should I look for in my SPF?
Antioxidants will work synergistically with your SPF to counter the damaging effects of free radicals released by UV radiation. Our Skin Insurance formulas are concentrated with a pioneering antioxidant called PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis – this active, based on stem cells from a rare red grape, protects the skin stem cells responsible for repair, as well as neutralising free radicals generated by UV radiation.
